The acetone will gradually dissolve the ink and it will be absorbed in the cotton ball.

Apply enough to cover the stain and allow it to soak down about half an inch. Allow the area to dry. This is another simple method to remove permanent ink from the carpet as acetone works at dissolving the ink. However this method can have a bleaching effect on dark colored carpet.

The alcohol will penetrate the stain but it can also go deeper and harm the padding under the carpet if you are not careful.
